WEBCOMICS, ILLUSTRATION, AND TRANSLATION

About the site
This website features my artwork, comics, and information about my Japanese to English translation service.

About the online galleries
This site mainly serves as a gallery to show my art and comics. The record-cover-esque links on the "webcomics & arth section of this site each open up a specific section of the gallery.

gYo, Doggie Comich -- This friendly wanderer jumped out of my sketchbook to star in a few Flash MX illustrations, and now stars in his very own 15 page online comic here.

The gillustrationzh link will direct you to an online version of my portfolio, soon to be printed through comixpress.com. I like to work with ink-brushes, digital & vector art, and black felt tip markers. Sometimes I combine those mediums, sometimes not.

About my art
My art influences are American comics from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, Mike Allred, Mike Mignola, and various traditional and modern Japanese artists and illustrators (Fuji Fumiya, Matazo Kayama, and Toshio Saeki to name a few). Oh yeah, can't forget Milo Manera from Italy and Moebius from France. Right now I'm really "into" making flat colors and smooth line drawings. I love looking at lots of different kinds of stuff, though.

My academic experiences with art are graduating with a degree in Studio Art from the University of Texas (where I also majored in Japanese Language) and participating in a 2 year research period focusing on Modern Japanese Painting (also called "Nihonga") technique and Japanese art history at the Hokkaido University of Education. Whee! That second school in Japan is where I picked up my love for the brush & jet-black ink combo, echoed by my love for slick superhero art of Allred, Kirby, and cartloads of unnamed and unsung comics artists of the 50s, 60s, and 70s.

About my translation service
In terms of the world of work, I am a freelance Japanese to English translator, operating from a home-based office in Sapporo, Japan. I receive translation jobs from a variety of sources, including translation companies. The translation portion of this website gives a brief explanation of the services I provide, the costs involved, and my experience, job skills, etc.

About me
me. I live in a fairly nice sized, and yet fairly cozy apartment with my wife in Sapporo, Japan. Where am I from? Well, you could say I'm from Austin, Texas, and yeah, I sure did spend a lot of time there, and that is where my family resides. Or you could say I'm from Oregon, cuz that be where I grewed up. I'll always have a bit of "Oregon" in me. And yeah, sometimes I tell people I'm "from Sapporo," cuz heck, that's where I have hung my darn hat for the past 7 years or so. Yeah, I never really know how to answer that question. Where am I from? Probably from some nether dimension where dragons permeate the skies and sweet bells sound in the distance. If you don't watch out, you might step on an elf-mushroom!!

My heroes are, in no particular order: Anne Rice, Gary Gygax, LL Cool J, Dinosaur Jr., Sanbo Mastaa, Coffee Color, Mike Mignola, Mike Allred, the entire TSR staff up to around 1983 or so, Cyborg of the animated Teen Titans, Philip Jose Farmer, Carlos Castaneda (pure fiction, all of it!), The Watchmen, Madeline L'Engle, Tortoise Matsumoto and the Ulfuls, Suchada Raparr, A Tribe Called Quest, Captain Kirk, the Hardy Brothers, Jack Nicolson, Kusanagi and Kimtaku of SMAP, and all of the characters in Greek myth, including Kevin Sorbo!!

(friends and family shall remain nameless ... for now)

I enjoy long walks, reading, and drawing. Comics, music, and sci-fi tv always seem to be around...
